“I have glorified You down here on Earth by completing the work that you gave me to do.” (John 17:4)
In the high priestly prayer of John 17we find these words of Jesus as he speaks to the
Father in his time of need and distress. Awaiting him in just a few hours is a cross where he will give his life as a ransom for all.
I find it very interesting that in light of the events that are to occur, one of the things on the mind of Jesus is the fact that he has totally and completely fulfilled the will and desires of his Father. For approximately 33 years Jesus’ desire was to complete the task that his Father had given him from the earliest of times. However, his mission on earth was not totally fulfilled yet as the darkest hour of his life was still to come. Even as he realized his impending death was at hand his sole desire was to bring glory to his Father. Within just a few short hours, Jesus would utter those triumphant words, “It is finished… into your hands I commit my spirit.”
Each and every time I ponder the life of Jesus I realize how focused he was on his mission from the splendor of heaven to the depths of the darkest valley on earth. As I think upon His life I cannot help but ask myself the question, “Am I fulfilling the will of the Father in my life?”
How long has it been since you took the time to ponder the Father’s will for your life? For many, the Father’s will is a an abstract concept that they have difficulty in grasping. How does one find the will of God for their life?
Throughout the life of Jesus Christ we can find instances when he withdrew to a lonely place and communed with the Father. I believe that Jesus was not only worshiping his Father during these times; he was also reconnecting with his Father in such a way that His will was manifest to him in new ways.
How long has it been since you spent a protracted time alone with God. I’m not referring to your daily devotional time or the time you spend at night in prayer before you lay down to rest. How long has it been since you intentionally spent time alone with God to seek His will in your life?
What is the will of God in your life? I believe that God has plans for each and every one of his children to complete. To take this thought even further, I believe that God has a plan that only you can complete. Maybe it’s time to take time for God.
At the end of my life may my words be as the words of Christ when I stand before God, “Father, I have glorified you down here on earth by completing the work that you gave me to do…”
